Visualizer Guide — Getting Started, Dashboards & Panels
Applies to: Cyfin and CyBlock · A complete walkthrough of using the Visualizer, from first login through building and managing dashboards and panels.
The Visualizer provides interactive, login-based dashboards for exploring your web-activity data in real time. This guide covers everything in one place: creating the logon account you need to get in, building and managing dashboards, and creating, filtering, printing, and deleting panels.
Before you begin: create a logon account
The Visualizer requires a logon account, and Cyfin and CyBlock ship with only the built-in admin account — no others. Before you (or anyone else) can log into the Visualizer, a logon account must exist for that person. Create one first:
- Go to User Management → Logon Accounts.
- Click the Add New Logon Account (green plus) icon. The Add Logon Account page opens.
- In Account Name, enter the unique logon name. (If you’ll use Active Directory authentication, it must match the AD account name exactly. Note: an admin account already exists.)
- In Authentication, choose Generate New Password (issues a default password, or e-mails logon details if your mail server is configured) or Use Active Directory (available only if an AD configuration exists — click Lookup to populate Full Name and E-Mail).
- In Role, select Administrator (full access to the product) or Manager (limited menu to create, run, and review reports).
- Enter the E-Mail Address (used as the report recipient) and set a Home Directory for saved reports if needed.
- Under Select Group(s), choose the groups this account can report on. (Administrator role is locked to Enterprise; Manager role can be any group.)
- Click Add to create the account.
Once the account exists, log into the Visualizer with those credentials.
Logging in and the dashboard
After logging into the Visualizer you’ll see a default blank dashboard. From here you build your view by adding dashboards (tabs) and panels (individual charts).
Dashboards
A dashboard is a tab that holds a set of panels. You can create multiple dashboards, each with its own name and view.
Add a dashboard
- Click the Add Dashboard icon in the top-right corner of your dashboard.
- Choose one of two options:
- Create from Template — create a new dashboard from an existing template.
- Create New Dashboard — create a blank dashboard.
Manage dashboards
- Click the Manage Dashboards icon to manage all created dashboards.
- From here you can:
- Change the order in which your dashboard tabs are displayed.
- Rename your dashboards.
- Delete any dashboard.
Panels
A panel is a single chart or visualization on a dashboard.
Add a panel
- Click the Add Panel icon in the top-right corner of your dashboard (on a new, blank dashboard this appears as Add New Panel).
- Choose one of two options:
- Create from Template — create a new panel from an existing panel/template you previously created.
- Create New Panel — build a brand-new panel from scratch.
Create a new panel (configuration)
To build a new panel:
- At the upper left of the screen, find the list of available Data Types. Drag and drop the data type you want your panel to use into the Data Source field.
- A default bar chart loads automatically, and the list of fields from that data type populates the left side of the screen.
- Select the type of chart you want to display your data (for example, bar, line, pie, or table).
- Drag and drop the fields you want to chart into Metrics and Dimensions.
- Click Save to add the panel to the dashboard.
Add a panel filter
Filters narrow the data shown in a panel.
- Configure the panel’s Data Source first — you can’t create a filter until the data source is set.
- Select the Filtering tab on the panel configuration screen.
- Click Add Filter. (Note: the first filter’s Logic field is locked to the AND operator.)
- Choose whether the filter should include or exclude your field.
- Select the match logic to use on your field.
- For a single filter, click Add. To add more, click Add + New.
Print a panel
- Click the arrow next to the panel title.
- On the Panel actions pop-up, click Print Chart. The chart opens in its own browser tab.
- Use your browser’s print options to print or save as PDF.
Delete a panel
- Click the arrow next to the panel title.
- On the Panel actions pop-up, click Delete.
- Important: this deletes the panel from the dashboard and from your panel templates. If you want to reuse the chart on another dashboard, duplicate it before deleting.
Tips
- Build separate dashboards (tabs) for different audiences or topics — each can have its own name and set of panels.
- Save panels you’ll reuse as templates, then use Create from Template to reproduce them quickly.
- Combine interactive Visualizer dashboards with scheduled standard reports for both self-service exploration and automated distribution.
